Criminal investigation course

The Kosovo Police Service was first established in October 1999, with the graduation of the first intake of officers from the KPS School. There are now well over four thousand KPS officers working throughout the province, alongside UNIP officers. During the first 12 CIC Courses 288 KPS officers obtained a certificate and became investigators. This Course indicates a movement toward the conduct of more specialised tasks by KPS officers, namely the investigation of serious criminal offences in partnership with the UNCIVPOL, Public Prosecutors and Investigating Judges.

Those officers who successfully complete the Investigators Course will be engaged in the exciting work of developing the role of the KPS as an efficient and professional team, assisting in the process of shaping the proper operation of a prosecution system that wins the confidence and support of all the peoples of Kosovo.

UN Security Council Resolution 1244 specified that one of the main responsibilities of the international civil presence would be establishment of a professional, credible and impartial local police force. One of the most important roles that the UNMIK Police and OSCE perform is the training and mentoring of the next generation of Kosovo police officers. The objective is to establish a multi-ethnic, self-sustaining Kosovo Police Service, that would be sufficiently staffed, adequately trained and properly equipped to function independently and according to internationally recognised standards of human rights and principles of democratic policing.
