Day 1: Lesson #1 What is Domestic Violence? Identifying and Defining Myths

The goal of this lesson is to provide participants with an introduction to the crime of domestic violence. To understand the nature, of the growing problem in this area faced by law -enforcement services world -wide, the lesson will examine the supposed, and actual causes of domestic violence, myths, and realities concerning the societal roles of women and men that foster such violence, and discuss possible solutions to this life-threatening social problem.

At the end of this lesson, participants will be able to:

1. Define “domestic violence.”
2. List six (6) forms of family violence.
3. List and briefly describe the seven (7) categories of abusive behavior.
4. Explain the underlying psychological cause of domestic violence.
5. Identify sixteen (16) common myths or misconceptions about domestic violence.
