Investigation Management

Description

Material for a 6-hour lesson, part of the Mid-Level Management Course, developed by the Kosovo Police Service School

Summary

Investigation management skills are not confined just to Police Officers. The skills required will be needed by all mid-level and above managers within various differing agencies such as customs, fire brigade, corrections or other security services. For example at the border it is likely that the police will have to work closely with customs officers if involved in investigating a case of major crime, and again, other security services within Kosovo may have to work in conjunction with other agencies to bring an effective investigation to prosecution.

Even if your present role does not include direct investigation management the purpose of today is to increase your awareness and knowledge of the attributes required to effectively manage any investigation.

The goal of this lesson is to introduce students to the role of the investigation manager, and to teach the students how to ensure that an investigation and an investigation team is managed effectively and efficiently.

By the end of this lesson the students will be able to:

  1. Describe their main responsibilities as investigation managers, as taught in the class.
  2. Describe some of the management concerns, that can be faced during an investigation, and identify potential solutions to those concerns.
  3. Describe the VOWS model of investigation management.
  4. Use the VOWS model to identify appropriate lines of enquiry for a major crime investigation.
  5. Outline strategies for managing a criminal investigation team.
