Police officers must be aware of the dangers posed by people engaged in drug-related activities. Not only is it important to the officer to consider his/her own safety, but he/she is also responsible for the safety of the user. As noted earlier in Drug Identification, drugs affect individuals differently, thus making it dangerous for the individual and the police officer. This lesson will provide an overview of those risk factors an officer must consider.
The goal of this lesson is to review the overall safety issues officers should consider when searching for and handling drugs and related paraphernalia. Emphasis will also be placed on considerations of the health and well being of the user if he/she has ingested a large dose of a specific drug.
