Lesson #22: Burns

Burn Injuries represent one of the most painful and devastating traumas a person can experience. Fire and burn related injuries are a leading cause of death from injury in children ages 1 – 14. Always perform a complete assessment to determine whether there are other serious injuries. Burns may look minor at first but they may continue to get worse. Monitor patient’s vital signs and be prepared to treat for shock.

After students complete this lesson they will have an understanding of types of the different types of burns including thermal, chemical and electrical, and special considerations for the assessment and treatment of infants and children with burn injuries.

At the end of this lesson the students will be able to:

  1. Explain how Burn severity is determined.
  2. Explain how Burn depth is measured.
  3. Demonstrate the Emergency Medical care for Burns.
  4. Demonstrate the proper care for Chemical Burns.
  5. Demonstrate the proper care for Electrical Burns.
