Lesson #30: First Aid


Material for a 9-hour lesson, part of the Basic Training Program of Macedonian Police, developed by the Police Development Unit of the OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje.


The police officer will be exposed to accidents, injuries, heart attacks, and sickness while on duty. Under these circumstances, a knowledge of first aid can often mean the difference between life and death. Because this is such an important area, each police officer will be required to learn basic first aid skills and maintain these skills throughout his/her service with the Macedonian Police. 
No police officer will permitted to go about his/her duties without being trained in first aid procedures.

The goal of this lesson is to provide students with an overview of the responsibilities of the police officer in relation to first aid.

At the conclusion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Identify the key elements of police officer safety at emergency situations.
  2. Identify the four (4) responsibilities of the police officer in relation to first aid.
  3. Outline the Three (3) Step process done at first survey of an emergency scene.
  4. Demonstrate the proper procedure for rescue breathing.
  5. Demonstrate the proper procedure for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  6. Demonstrate the proper procedure for the choking victim (abdominal thrusts).
  7. Outline the procedure for surveying a victim’s complete state.
  8. Outline the procedure for stopping bleeding.
  9. Outline the procedure for treating shock.
  10. Demonstrate the procedure for applying dressings to various body parts.
  11. Demonstrate the procedures for treating bone, joint and muscle injuries.
  12. List the signs and symptoms for at least three (3) medical emergencies and their correct treatments.
  13. Demonstrate at least three (3) methods for moving victims.
