Lesson #5: Domestic Violence Investigation

Material for a 2-hour lesson, part of the course on Domestic Violence, developed by the Police Development Unit of the OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje.

Summary

This lesson will address the required police response, as well as the methodology to be used by police officers when interviewing involved parties and victims of domestic violence. The safety and security of the victims and the offender’s accountability will be major point of discussion through the whole lecture , as well as the collaboration between the human service providers (lawyers, social workers, health workers, 
NGOs) and the judiciary to effectively address Domestic Violence. By the end of this lesson the participants will be able to acknowledge and subsequently:

  • Increase the understanding of the prevalence of domestic violence and the dynamics of domestic violence.
  • Improve police professionals’ ability to identify and assess domestic violence.
  • Improve police intervention and investigations strategies.
  • Identify barriers to proper arrest, prosecution, sentencing, and community oversight of domestic violence offenders that police officers face.
