Summary

A KPS Officer and particularly a Border Police Officer must have a good understanding of the methods to be used when searching a vehicle. You must be aware of the guidelines and procedures to be followed when searching vehicles and understand the safety precautions when carrying out a vehicle search. This lesson will provide you with a sound knowledge of the correct way in which to complete this task.

The purpose of this lesson is that participants understand the safety precautions an officer should use when conducting vehicle searches and understand the police guidelines to be followed when conducting such a search.

At the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the reason and the importance of having a standardized plan to search a vehicle
  2. List five (5) officer’s precautions when conducting a vehicle search.
  3. List the five (5) pieces of information to be recorded concerning a vehicle being searched.
  4. List the five (5) items of equipment required by a police officer when conducting a vehicle search.
  5. List the eight (8) areas of a vehicle and the order in which they should be searched and demonstrate the correct methods to search a vehicle.
