Lesson #7: Automated External Defibrillation

Description

Material for a 1-hour lesson, part of the First Aid and Basic Cardio Life Course, developed by the Kosovo Police Service School

Summary

The interval from collapse to defibrillation is the most important determinant of survival from cardiac arrest. Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) is a public health initiative that aims to shorten this interval by placing AEDs in the hands of the trained non-medical professionals. PAD provides the opportunity to defibrillate victims within a few minutes of collapse. This initiative has the potential to be the single greatest advance in the treatment of cardiac arrest since the development of CPR.

To allow students opportunity to observe, practice, and perform Automated External Defibrillation and Adult CPR skills associated with basic life support.

At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:

  1. Explain when you use an AED.
  2. Demonstrate the application and operation of the automated external defibrillator.
