Summary

Robbery and theft with violence are similar serious crimes that can be accomplished in a variety of ways. Ultimately, all robberies are accomplished by the use of force or threat of force and violence while attempting to commit a theft from a person. All thefts with violence are also accomplished by the use of force or threat of force and violence, when caught in the act of theft and with the intention to keep the stolen property.

Accordingly, robbery and theft with violence have the potential for the loss of property and the loss of human life.
The difference between them is not essential for the investigation, that is why we can use similar methods for investigation of such two crimes.

Responding, observing, interviewing the victims and witnesses, broadcasting the robber’s description and collection of evidence in this lesson plan are the common path in the investigation of these two crimes. You have to find your own path during the investigation of a particular crime.

The goal of this lesson is to show officers how to respond to the scene of a robbery or theft with violence and fully investigate these two crimes.

At the conclusion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the tasks of the investigator responding to the scene in the case of Robbery or Theft with violence
  2. Describe the investigator’s responsibilities upon arrival at the scene of Robbery
  3. List the three (3) types of views when investigating a robbery and describe each one
  4. Explain the importance of interviewing the victim of robbery
  5. Describe correct interviewing of witnesses
  6. Demonstrate how to broadcast the robber’s description
  7. Identify various types of evidence that may be available at the scene of a robbery or a theft with violence
