Summary

In previous sessions we have looked at leader and manager styles; their history and how in the interest of performance, efficiency and follower relations there is a need to carefully balance the approaches used. It was also clear that whilst the manager cannot, at the same time use a variety of styles there would be times when groups or individuals may need a different style or approach for either the situation or how an individual follower responds to certain styles.

This session will focus upon the first of three of the most important elements connected with managing people. That is:

  • Through personal development
  • Through performance
  • Through discipline

To explain contemporary approaches we will examine the competency and behavioral framework that can be equally applied to any of the three elements and if properly considered allows for effective people management as well as making the position of the manager much easier and gives a framework for identifying good or poor activities.

We will also look, using a comparative framework at the specific competency ‘Team Working’ and how different countries or international organisation use them from a very simple overview to a more complex style.

The purpose of this lesson is to:

a) Explore factors that can affect a manager’s response to people they are responsible for
b) Describe the use of Behavioral Frameworks and / or a Competency Frameworks to support the management of people

After this block of instruction the participants will be able to:

  1. List five elements of managing people that can cause problems for the manager 
  2. Summarise what behavioural and competency based frameworks are and where it can be used within the organisation to support effective management of people
  3. Give examples of approaches used in the development of people
