Summary

Leadership is increasingly being seen as a key to improved performance. It is needed at all levels of an organisationĀ - not just at the top. There is a set of definable leadership skills, which when used fully, helps managers to get the most out of a team.

Many Police organisations run leadership programmes for the management staff at all levels, from the Sergeant through Senior Police managers. This underlines the point that many organizations have learnt; that leadership is not something we are born with but something that can be developed in all of us.

The goal of this module is to familiarize participants with the contemporary leadership applications in management and importance of empowermnet in modern management practises.

By the end of this module, the participant will be able to:

  • Explain leadership, power and authority;
  • Identify what constitutes a good leader;
  • Explain how a leader differs from a manager;
  • List the different leadership types and explain how to match appropriate types to particular circumstances;
  • Comlete an exercise to identify their own leadership style;
  • Demostrate their understanding of the term 'empowerment' and what an empowering leader does.
