Office co-organised training seminar on profiling techniques for border guards

Summary

From 18- 22 July in Petropavlovsk, the Office in co-operation with the U.S. Embassy organized the third in a series of total five five-day training seminars on profiling techniques for some 20 officers from the Border Service of the National Security Committee. Experts from the Association of Psychologists and Behavioural Therapists of Kazakhstan and the Central Asian Regional Information Coordination Center for Combating the Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and their Precursors (CARICC) presented an overview of the security situation in Central Asia with a focus on illicit drug trafficking and on using psychological techniques for the identification of potential criminals during the border crossing verification process. Topics also included psychological profiling, the identification elements of risk profiles and the use of different risk indicators. A practical exercise was conducted at the Zhana Zhol crossing point near the border with the Russian Federation.
