Presence in Albania organized preparatory training programme for Local Safety Councils

Summary

From 25 to 27 April, as part of an effort to build partnerships between citizens and institutions in the security sector, the Presence launched a preparatory training programme for local actors in the municipalities of Korca and Gjirokastra on the soon to be established Local Safety Councils. The concept of these Safety Councils – an overarching structure dealing with security and safety of citizens– was presented to some 30 municipal officials dealing with domestic violence, trafficking and minors, as well as representatives of State Social Services, Educational Directorate, Regional Health Directorate, State Police, Probation Service, and NGOs. Participants were given training on legislation relevant to the Safety Councils, as well as on case studies covering their areas of work (domestic violence, youth criminality, etc.). This training programme is the first tangible step towards the establishment of these Councils. Subsequent steps will involve discussions with mayors and regional Police Directors that will lead to the signing of a formal document between the institutions to officially establish the Councils in the two pilot regions.
