From 12 to 16 September, the fourth in a series of five OSCE-supported training seminars on profiling techniques at the border checkpoints for 16 officers representing the Border Service of the National Security Committee was held at the border crossing point “Karasu” on the border with Kyrgyzstan. The event was co-organized with the US Embassy in Kazakhstan. Experts from the Association of Psychologists and Behavioural Therapists of Kazakhstan and Central Asian Regional Information Coordination Center for Combating the Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and their Precursors (CARICC) presented an overview of the security situation in Central Asia with regards to the illicit trafficking of drugs and on psychological techniques to help identify potential criminals during the border crossing verification process. A practical exercise was conducted at a border checkpoint to allow participants to utilize the skills acquired during the training event. Three previous events were held in Almaty, Kazygurt and Petropavlovsk.
