Summary

From 9 to 11 August, the Office organized a training course in Dushanbe on the role of continuous religious dialogue as a method to prevent extremism. The 35 participants represented the State Committee on Religious Affairs, the Council of Religious Scholars (Ulemas), various law enforcement agencies and national and international non-governmental organisations. One international expert of Islamic academic background stressed the role of Imams as educators of local communities and encouraged both the law enforcement agencies and religious leaders to closely co-operate against VERLT. The second international expert offered a historical perspective on the formation of radical groups in the United Kingdom and Germany, and on civil society-led initiatives combatting violent extremism.
