Mission in Kosovo hosted a regional conference on empowering women in the security sector

Summary

Aiming to strengthen the role and position of women in the public safety sector, the Mission facilitated a regional conference for around 60 participants on 24 and 25 May in Mitrovica/Mitrovicë North. Conference topics included: daily work challenges for women police; the increase of gender quotas and the promotion of women to management and leadership positions; the role of media and the role of women in law enforcement organizations in preventing and fighting organized crime, with a special emphasis on prevention and countering terrorism, violent extremism and radicalization.

Participants included: senior officers of the Kosovo Police, the Association of Kosovo Police Women, women from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Forum of Women Judges and Prosecutors of Kosovo, regional public safety institutions from Albania, Serbia and Montenegro, OSCE mission representatives, international and civil society organizations. The conference focused on defining modalities to strengthen regional and inter-institutional co-operation, and on organizing joint regional security initiatives and research projects for gender representation.
