From 16 to 17 December, the OSCE Border Security and Management Training Support Network meeting took place in Vienna. The event was co-organised by the Border Security and Management Unit of the Transnational Threats Department and the Border Management Staff College (BMSC).Twenty-five representatives of border guard/police and customs training institutions of 20 countries as well as the FRONTEX agency participated in discussions.
The meeting strengthened cooperation and communication within the Network and identified goals and priorities of the participating agencies and their national training institutions in terms of the border guard/police and customs education. The discussion focused on the rapidly changing security environment and the need for border security and management agencies to offer up-to-date programmes focusing on current and emerging challenges. Two of the most disturbing issues that were identified are the migration trends and foreign terrorist fighter phenomena. The participants supported an increased focus on cyber security and risk management.
