Summary

Following regional campaigns in Korça and Elbasan, on 15 October, the Presence in Albania, in co-operation with the Albanian State Police and Gjirokastra Municipality, launched a three day campaign against domestic violence in Gjirokastra.

The programme included an awareness-raising march with high school students, patrol police officers and municipality employees, through the town’s main boulevard, as well as distribution of informative leaflets and brochures on domestic violence and how to seek help.

On 17 October the Presence in Albania facilitated a discussion forum between a group of 50 high school students and parliamentarians on domestic violence.

The main issues discussed included the role of the Assembly’s parliamentary sub-committee on minors, gender equality and domestic violence and its contribution to fighting domestic violence; the Assembly’s efficiency in holding relevant government institutions accountable on domestic violence issues; the use of hearing sessions as an efficient tool to gather input and discuss issues related to the implementation of protective and preventive measures; economic empowerment of women; and the creation of shelters for victims of domestic violence.
