Raising awareness on community policing and security issues

Description

In order to support and assist the regions in implementing local initiatives relating to community policing a fund was required to provide logistical support in educating and informing the public of its activities. The project was needed to oversee and support such initiatives.

Summary

The overall goal of the project was to assist the MoIA in strengthening the Region Prevention Units within the Sectors of Internal Affairs through enhancing their community policing activities which required raising awareness material. The project goal was achieved through the following objectives:

  • Strengthening the trust and confidence between citizens and the police.
  • Raising awareness among citizens about security concerns affecting them at the decentralized level throughout the Host Country.
  • Assist and support the Prevention Units to address security concerns thorough the implementation of the planned prevention activities at a de centralized level.

Project Activities:
As well as supporting the MoIA Strategic Plan for 2009-2011, the “Raising awareness” project also provided funds for promoting local initiatives in the various regions which included:

  • Drugs abuse prevention;
  • Juvenile delinquency;
  • Traffic safety;
  • Domestic violence;
  • Gun violence;
  • Burglary and robbery;
  • Vandalism;
  • Drinking of alcohol;
  • School safety
  • Human rights regarding the safety and security;
  • Trafficking
  • Diversity awareness

Materials donated include: posters, flyers, pamphlets and items which promote community policing activities at a de centralized level.

Results: 
Improved cooperation between the Police and the public as a result of the interaction during these activities and a greater awareness by the public of the issues raised.
