On 3 June the Mission, in co-operation with police officers from the Kumanovo Sector for Internal Affairs (SIA), organised a roundtable discussion in Lipkovo on the role of women in creating safer communities. The roundtable was moderated by police officers from the Crime and Prevention Departments of the SIA Kumanovo, with the support from Mission representatives. The participants included 14 women from different ethnic backgrounds and professions, who engage with the community on a regular basis. The aim of the roundtable was to identify how women can contribute to policing, safety and security in their own communities.
Key issues raised during the roundtable included road safety, negative perceptions of the police, police presence and trust therein. The event is part of the Mission’s programme to support the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MoIA) in developing a professional police service in line with democratic policing principles and international human rights standards. A second roundtable is planned to be held in Kumanovo on 15 June 2016, with the participation of the Mission’s Gender Working Group representative in line with the Mission’s Gender Action Plan.
