On 30 April the Presence in Albania began the implementation of a project to assess the Albanian Border Police radio communication network.
The project aims to physically check the integrity and functionality of the entire radio communication system, which the Presence in Albania donated to the Albanian Border and Migration Police in 2005. The technical expert hired by the Presence in Albania will visit all sites and will test the equipment to evaluate its technical condition, and will produce a detailed report on the situation, giving clear recommendations for further steps to be taken.
The current radio system is largely outdated and most of the time out of use. Police have flagged this as a serious concern, given that without effective radio communication, the fight against organized crime and the response to serious natural or man-made disasters is severely hampered.
The report will be shared with the senior management of the Albanian State Police and the Ministry of Interior for decisions on further action.
