Summary

In line with requirements and needs of the police, the designed course entails lessons on identifying the signs and symptoms of most common mental illnesses, understanding of mental health issues by first responders, competencies in interviewing and communicating with mentally ill persons, and verbal and non-verbal communication techniques to assist in controlling the situation. Specific focus was given to improving the skills and procedures when interacting with and controlling mentally ill and emotionally disturbed persons, in accordance with proportionate force continuum response whilst upholding human rights.
