Summary

On 20 and 23 of February the Presence, in co-operation with the European Union Institution Building for Enforcing Environmental Acquis (IBECA) project, delivered a one-week training course to the regional state inspectorates on environment and forests of Vlora, Gjirokastra, Korça and Tirana. The aim of the course was to present best practices and waste shipment inspection procedures, illegal waste at borders, as well as joint actions to manage environmentally sensitive goods at border crossings. The training included plenary sessions in Tirana and practical inspections at the Qafë-Thana border-crossing point. During the field inspections, the group identified gaps in the conduct of physical inspection conducted by the Albanian Food Authority at the border point, and concluded that there was lack of synergy and co-ordination among the environmental agencies. In this context, the Presence will address the issue again and provide recommendations to improve measures to tackle environmental crime.
