Summary

In the framework of a joint effort of the Presence and UNHCR to support the government to improve its irregular migrants pre-screening system, the Presence conducted an evaluation of the border police needs, with a special focus on procedures for potential victims of trafficking and unaccompanied minors. The exercise aimed at further enhancing institutional capacities to detect and prevent human trafficking and protect victims. In this context, and in co-ordination with the Albanian Border and Migration Directorate of the State Police, the Presence conducted a round of interviews with border police officers in Tirana, Shkodra, Kukës, Gjirokastra and Durrës. The interviews gathered recommendations to ensure that the migrants entering Albania are identified and offered protection, in line with international human rights standards.
