This report, produced by the SPMU, provides an overview of the sessions of the workshop that took place in Tashkent on 14-15 May 2008 as well as recommendations by the participants. Building capacity of national criminal justice systems in Central Asia and improving cooperation and information exchange between investigative agencies and central authorities were the aims of this workshop.
The two-day event was organised by the OSCE Strategic Police Matters Unit (SPMU) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), with the support of the office of the OSCE Project Co-coordinator in Uzbekistan, Office of the Special Representative and Co-ordinator for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Regional Office for Central Asia.
The workshop brought together government representatives and experts from United Arab Emirates, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and the United States. A special emphasis was put on enhancing co-operation between the authorities from Central Asian countries and other source and destination countries.
