Summary

With roots in both philosophy and psychology – the systematic study of behaviour – Social Psychology stands today as a separate discipline.

The subject matter of Social Psychology encompasses a broad range of topics, and the list grows from year to year as psychologists develop new techniques for studying individuals interacting with each other and with their social and physical environment.

Most of the topics of Social Psychology have a direct bearing on the management and leadership processes and they are incorporated in one way or another in management training at different levels.

In this lesson we will introduce some of the basic concepts of Social Psychology concerning the social influence on the individual behaviour.

At the end of this lesson participants will be able to:

  1. Define the field of Social Psychology and outline its main scope of study.
  2. Explain the role of the process of socialization for the formation of personality.
  3. Justify the performance of social roles and identify possible role conflicts.
  4. Explain the social need of the individual for conformity and obedience to authority.
  5. Describe some aspects of anti-social and pro-social behaviour.
