Teaching in schools - school environment

Description

Material for a 45-minute lesson, part of the Training Course on Community Safety Awareness Raising Programme, developed by the OSCE Mission in Kosovo for the Kosovo Police

Summary

Rapid developments in the society have made our livelihoods easier, but they also have created various sets of risks. In such societal development, children have the highest potential of being prey to various risks. In addition, changes occurring in children themselves render them weak in responding to various life situations. Since they spend most of the time in school, the school can play a significant role in preparing them to avoid difficult situations, as well as in terms the time of response, to be able to react properly and report timely and adequately.

The functioning of the organizational structure of the school, flexible curricula, effective teaching and learning both during school hours as well as during extracurricular activities, always in cooperation with contributing actors, ensure preparation of students to cope with current challenges, but also the challenges the future may bring.

The purpose of the course is to enable the participants to create a clear overview of all opportunities offered by the school in protecting children/pupils and raising their awareness on various risks against their safety and health.

By the end of the course, the participants shall be able to:

  • Explicate the role of school bodies in raising the awareness of pupils on various risks present in today’s society;
  • Explicate the role of the school in developing a better cooperation with the community in providing safe and sound environment for pupils;
  • Identify sections of new curricula addressing prevention of human-made risks;
  • Demonstrate skills in treating, together with students in class, life situations they could face.
