Summary

All through our lives, to a greater or lesser extent we are in direct contact with other people: our family, our close friends, our colleagues at work and people in our local community.

This makes each of us a member of different groups. Some have decisive influence on us and affect our behavior, views and attitudes.

It is unrealistic to view ourselves purely as independent individuals. We all depend on and are influenced by the standards and the behavior that is characteristic for the group we are a member of.

The purpose of this lesson is to familiarize participants with the concept of teambuilding, developed from groups in general to teams in particular. It will give participants an understanding of the fundamental importance of teambuilding and the influence it has upon accomplishing organizational objectives and goals.

At the end of this session each participant will be able to:

  • Give a definition of 'Group'.
  • Briefly explain the main dynamics in a group.
  • Explain the Synergy Effect by means of a practical example.
  • Describe the meaning of the special role that a leader has to play.
  • Explain by examples the difference between formal / informal rules of groups.
  • Outline briefly possible conflicts of norms.
  • Outline the possible reaction to a breach of norms.
  • Describe what makes the “team” special in comparison with a “group” in general.
  • Describe by which qualities successful teams are determined.
  • Outline of which common practices leaders should make use.
  • Describe the main four stages of group development.
  • Identify main causes of conflict.
  • Outline possible ways to resolve and prevent team conflicts.
