Summary

Police leaders carry out the stated missions, goals and objectives of a police service by motivating others in the organisation. In order to accomplish this, the leader must first understand the basic functions of a leader, as well as the various styles of or approaches available to leaders. No one particular style of leadership is the best; each has advantages and disadvantages. When the knowledge and skill essential to the effective leader is joined to an appropriate leadership style, missions will be executed successfully.

The aim of this lesson is to present participants with some of the basic concepts of leadership and leadership styles. It will help them understand the fundamental importance of identifying the correct leadership style dependent upon the given situation.

This lesson will also examine the relation of leadership to organisation and environment.

At the end of this session each participant will be able to:

  • Illustrate the main types of leadership;
  • Describe factors that influence leadership;
  • Outline the main styles of situational leadership;
  • Describe the First Line Supervisor’s role within the organisation;
  • State some further ideas how to maintain successful leadership.
