Lesson #6: Principles of non-discrimination - Women in society

Description

Material for a 2-hour lesson, part of the Human Rights and Law Enforcement Course, developed by the Kosovo Police Service School.

Summary

The main focus of this presentation is to put on the table a number of points and issues that relate to the role of women in society, in particular Kosovar society.

First of all, we will not be going too deeply into the international and European human rights protection mechanisms in this session. We will cover these in greater detail when we talk about specific crimes and discrimination against women. (There is an other session about gender issues). This session will look at the role of women in society and how and why society treats women the way society does.

The goal of the lesson is to raise awareness among participants about the negative effects of discrimination against women. We will look at the expectations those men, women and society have regarding the role of women in a changing, pre post-conflict society.

Please note this session is not a typical skills or knowledge transfer session. It is designed to stimulate thinking, discussion and dialogue about a potentially sensitive issue.

By the end of the lesson the participants will be able to:

  1. state the difference between sex and gender
  2. explain the roles of women in Kosovar society as discussed during the lesson
