Lesson #F10: Weapon Disarming

Description

Material for a 3-hour lesson on usage of firearms, part of the Basic Training Program of Macedonian Police, developed by the Police Development Unit of the OSCE Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje.

Summary

Police officers occasionally encounter persons who will offer violence in order to evade detection and prosecution. In extreme cases, the officer has to deal with the threat of deadly violence, i.e. disarming a suspect pointing a firearm. Any attempt to disarm a suspect who is pointing a firearm at the officer is a last resort measure. If an officer is alert and attentive to potential dangers, this last resort will never have to be employed.
This lesson will describe a technique for disarming which MUST only be used as a last resort. There is no easy replacement for the exercise of those basic skills of constantly assessing a situation for potential danger and then minimising that threat in the most efficient manner.

The goal of this lesson is to provide students with a basic technique for disarming a suspect who approaches with a firearm.

At the end of the lesson the students will:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to disarm a suspect approaching to the front.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to disarm a suspect approaching to the rear.
