Summary

The model was devised by John Heron, formerly of the Human Potential Research Project, University of Surrey, UK. It categorises one to one communication into six types according to the intent or purpose behind them. It was originally devised to assist people in a practitioner and client relationship in professional settings, such as doctors and their patients. In police training it is used to enable the trainer to choose the most appropriate form of words to help students learn.

To develop practical skills in communication between the trainer and the learner in terms of six types of intervention.

At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the use of Six - Category Intervention Analysis which include prescriptive, 
    informative, confronting, cathartic, catalytic and supportive.
